The name Khadijah (خَدِيجَة) is derived from the Arabic trilateral root KH-D-J (خ-د-ج). The literal linguistic meaning connects to "prematurity" — a child born before term. However, this linguistic origin is only a small part of the story.

The First to Believe

When Prophet Muhammad ﷺ returned from Cave Hira in a state of terror after the first revelation, wrapped in a blanket and trembling, it was Khadijah (ra) who first believed. She embraced him, comforted him, and spoke the most powerful words of faith ever recorded:

"By Allah, Allah will never disgrace you. You keep good relations with your kin, help the poor and the destitute, serve your guests generously, and assist the deserving calamity-afflicted ones." — Khadijah bint Khuwaylid (ra), Sahih al-Bukhari 3

She then took him to her cousin Waraqa ibn Nawfal, a Christian scholar of the pre-Islamic era, who confirmed that this was the same revelation Musa (as) had received. From that moment, Khadijah (ra) was the first Muslim — the first to declare "There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His Messenger."

The Best of Women

"The best of the world's women are Maryam bint Imran, Khadijah bint Khuwaylid, Fatima bint Muhammad, and Asiya bint Muzahim (the wife of Pharaoh)." — Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, Sahih al-Bukhari 3411 & Musnad Ahmad

This authenticated Hadith establishes Khadijah (ra) as one of the four greatest women in all of human history — a rank shared only with the mother of Prophet Isa (Maryam), the daughter of the Prophet ﷺ (Fatima), and the righteous wife of Pharaoh (Asiya).

Allah's Greeting to Khadijah

"The Angel Jibreel came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, this is Khadijah coming to you with a container of food. When she reaches you, convey to her the greetings of her Lord and give her the glad tidings of a palace of jewels in Paradise, wherein there will be no noise and no toil.'" — Sahih al-Bukhari 3820

This is one of the most extraordinary honors in all of Islamic tradition — Allah Himself sending greetings to Khadijah (ra) through the Angel Jibreel. No other woman in history received this direct salutation from the Divine.

The Prophet's ﷺ Undying Love

Even years after Khadijah's (ra) death, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ continued to speak of her with the deepest love and gratitude. He would slaughter a sheep and send portions to her friends. When one of her old friends visited, he would rise to greet her. When Aisha (ra) once expressed some jealousy over how often he remembered her, the Prophet ﷺ said:

"Indeed, I was granted her love." — Sahih Muslim 2435

Khadijah (ra) passed away in 619 CE, three years before the Hijrah, at approximately 65 years of age. That year — which also saw the death of the Prophet's ﷺ uncle Abu Talib — is known as the "Year of Sorrow" (Aam al-Huzn) in Islamic history because of the immense loss.
