Karbala — 10 Muharram 61 AH (680 CE)

Husayn (ra) refused to give allegiance to what he considered unjust rule under Yazid ibn Mu'awiya. Traveling with a small party of family members and companions — some seventy-two in total — he was intercepted at Karbala, in modern-day Iraq, by the army of Yazid. On the 10th of Muharram, 61 AH (10 October 680 CE), Husayn (ra) was martyred along with most of his family members, including his infant son Ali al-Asghar.

This day, known as Ashura (the 10th), is one of the most spiritually significant days in Islamic history. Husayn's (ra) stand at Karbala — refusing tyranny even at the cost of his own life and the lives of his family — is remembered as one of the most powerful moral moments in world history.
