Meaning & Etymology of Zayd

The name Zayd (زَيْد) comes from the Arabic trilateral root Z-Y-D (ز-ي-د), which carries the fundamental meanings of "to increase, to grow, to prosper, to add." It is a beautiful du'a name — parents naming a son Zayd are invoking a prayer for growth in blessing, wisdom, and righteousness for their child.

This verse is one of the most significant in the Quran regarding the abolition of the pre-Islamic institution of formal adoption. Zayd (ra) had been adopted by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and was called "Zayd ibn Muhammad" for years. Allah then revealed the ruling that adopted children retain their biological lineage, so he became known as "Zayd ibn Harithah" (Zayd son of Harithah — his biological father). His marriage to Zaynab bint Jahsh (ra) ended, and she was subsequently married to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to establish the principle that a Muslim may marry the former spouse of an adopted son — a distinction from biological sons.

Beyond the theological point, the mention of Zayd by name in the Quran is a permanent honor. Every Muslim who recites Surah Al-Ahzab 33:37 pronounces his name in worship — a station shared by no other Companion.

His Extraordinary Story

Zayd (ra) was born into a noble Arab tribe. As a child, he was kidnapped by raiders and sold into slavery. He was eventually purchased by Khadijah bint Khuwaylid (ra), and she gifted him to her husband — the young Muhammad ﷺ, before the coming of prophethood.

Years later, Zayd's biological family finally located him in Makkah and came to purchase his freedom. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "If he wishes to go with you, he goes with you freely and with no ransom. If he wishes to stay with me, then Allah knows I would not exchange for anyone the one who has chosen me."

Zayd was called and asked. He replied: "I will never leave this man. I have found in him what no one can equal — a father, an uncle, a friend." His father wept in astonishment. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ then took Zayd into the courtyard of the Kaaba and publicly proclaimed him his son — "Zayd ibn Muhammad." From that moment until the revelation of Surah Al-Ahzab, Zayd was known as the Prophet's ﷺ own son.

The Beloved of the Messenger

Aisha (ra) narrated a beautiful description of Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ love for Zayd:

"Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent an army, he made Zayd its commander, and had he lived after him, he would have made him his successor [as a commander]." — Aisha (ra), Sunan al-Tirmidhi 3813 (graded hasan)

The Martyrdom at Mu'tah

In 629 CE, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ sent an army to Mu'tah (in modern-day Jordan) to face a Byzantine force. He appointed three commanders in succession — Zayd first, then Ja'far ibn Abi Talib (ra), then Abdullah ibn Rawaha (ra) — instructing that if one fell, the next would take command. All three were martyred at Mu'tah. When news reached Madinah, the Prophet ﷺ wept openly for Zayd (ra).

Zayd's (ra) son Usama ibn Zayd (ra) — raised in the Prophet's ﷺ own household — was so beloved by the Prophet ﷺ that when Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was on his deathbed, he had appointed Usama (only about 18 years old) as commander of an army heading north. He is called "the beloved son of the beloved."
