When Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was negotiating at Hudaybiyya, he sent Uthman ibn Affan (ra) to Makkah as his messenger. When Uthman was delayed and word spread that he might have been killed by Quraysh, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ called the 1,400 accompanying Companions to gather under a large tree. There he took from each of them personally a pledge — that they would fight to the death to avenge Uthman.
Each Companion placed his hand in the Prophet's ﷺ hand one by one and swore. Even Uthman himself received a pledge — the Prophet ﷺ placed his own right hand in his left hand and pledged on Uthman's behalf as if he were present.
Shortly afterward, Allah revealed:
"Certainly was Allah pleased (raḍiya) with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you (Muhammad) under the tree, and He knew what was in their hearts, so He sent down tranquility upon them, and rewarded them with an imminent victory." — Surah al-Fath 48:18
The 1,400 Companions who took this pledge are known collectively as Ashab al-Shajara — People of the Tree — and are among the most honored generation of Sahaba. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "No one who pledged allegiance under the tree will enter the Fire" (Sahih Muslim 2496).
