About This Collection

Nur is one of the most sacred concepts in Islam. The Quran teaches that Allah Himself is Al-Nur — "The Light" — one of His Beautiful Names (Al-Asma al-Husna). The great Ayat al-Nur (Surah An-Nur 24:35) — one of the most cherished verses in the Quran — begins: "Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth."

To name a child Nur is not merely to name them "light" — it is to invoke Allah's own attribute upon them, to pray that they be guided by divine light through life. This collection features standalone Nur names for boys and girls, Nur compounds (Nuruddin, Nurul Iman, etc.), Nur + Sahaba names (Nur Aisyah, Nur Fatimah), names derived from the N-W-R root (Munir, Anwar, Manar), and light-related names from Persian, Malay, Turkish, and other Muslim traditions.

About the Name Nur

النُّور

Understanding why Nur is so beloved in Islam — its Quranic foundation, its status as a Name of Allah, and the great Prophetic du'a of light.

"Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth... Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills."

— Surah An-Nur 24:35 (partial)

The name Nur (نُور) carries three layers of Islamic meaning:

1. A Name of Allah. Al-Nur ("The Light") is one of Allah's 99 Beautiful Names — a Name of Allah drawn directly from Surah An-Nur 24:35. Because it is a Name of Allah, technically the Abdul- (servant of) prefix is preferred when naming a boy after it — Abd al-Nur ("Servant of the Light"). However, using Nur as a standalone name is universally accepted and beloved across all Muslim traditions.

2. A Quranic honor. The 24th Surah of the Quran is named An-Nur — "The Light." No other name has an entire Surah named for it as a divine attribute. This gives the name Nur a unique Quranic weight.

3. A Prophetic du'a. The Prophet ﷺ made a beautiful du'a asking Allah to fill him with light in every part of his being:

"O Allah, place in my heart light, and in my tongue light, and in my hearing light, and in my sight light, and behind me light, and in front of me light, and above me light, and beneath me light. O Allah, grant me light." — Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, Sahih al-Bukhari 6316

Naming a child Nur is invoking this du'a upon them — asking Allah to fill their heart, tongue, hearing, sight, and every direction of their being with divine light.

Verification & Sources

Every Nur-family name on this page has verified Islamic sourcing. The name Nur itself is drawn from Allah's Beautiful Name Al-Nur (Surah An-Nur 24:35). The great Ayat al-Nur is one of the most beloved verses in the entire Quran and has been the subject of extensive scholarly commentary — including the classical tafsir of Al-Tabari, Ibn Kathir, and Al-Razi.

The Prophetic du'a on light quoted above is from Sahih al-Bukhari 6316 — a widely-known supplication the Prophet ﷺ made regularly. It remains in daily use across the Muslim world today.

Nur-compound naming traditions differ regionally: Nuruddin is dominant in the Arab world and Turkey (after Sultan Nuruddin Zangi and other historical figures), Nurul- compounds are dominant in South Asia and Southeast Asia, and Nur + Sahaba compounds are especially beloved in Indonesian, Malay, and Pakistani families. All are equally authentic and Islamically valid.
